To have the best experience and gain the most value from BAM!, it is important to have a strategy for organizing your content.  By combining folder structure and permissions, it is possible to provide different groups of users with just the assets they need to work with.

Folder Structure (hierarchy)

The folder structure used in the DAM should be considered carefully.  It is far easier to spend some time on planning and evaluating options at the beginning of a deployment than it is to change everything later.  Since every company manages their business differently, it is impossible to provide an example for every possible situation.  We recommend organizing content around logical categories, starting with the most general and working toward very specific subjects.

Example 1: Organize Folders by Product

In this example, an auto broker has organized their content by vehicle type, new/old, place of origin, brand, and model.  This structure makes sense for the auto business, and companies with multiple product lines and a complex set of offerings might use something similar.

Example 2: Organize Folders by Business Unit

Here, a company is providing reference documents for their employees.  Some of these are for company-wide use, while others are intended for one location or region. They have created separate folders for these categories and added specific assets to each one:

This kind of organizational structure often matches the company’s org chart.  This is especially useful when permissions are assigned by business unit, as described in the Permissions article in the BAM! Support Portal.

Reordering Folders

Folders within the DAM & MST libraries will be displayed in the order in which they are created by default but can be dragged and dropped into whatever structure meets your particular needs. Folders can be dragged and dropped into and out of other folders, and all of the contents & the appropriate permissions will be maintained. While you are dragging a folder into another folder the destination folder will be highlighted, when dragging a folder in between other folders a blue dividing line will indicate where the folder will be dropped:

NOTE: Only users that are assigned a role with the 'Move Folder' privileges will be able to modify the order of folders. By default, the roles with 'Move Folder' privileges are Editor, Approver, Publisher and Content Admin.
